  • My toaster oven:

Krups FBC2 1600 Watts Toaster Oven with Convection Cooking

“ After only a couple of years of life, this piece of junk has died. First one of the 6 heating elements broke (they're glass tubes with a metal coil inside). I bought a full set of 6 replacement heating elements, because Krups won't sell you just a single one. But I figured it was worth it and I might use more in the future.

However the oven was incredibly hard to take apart. It took multiple hours to get the new heating element in place. The case and chassis are cheap and do not always use real bolts and screws you can take out and put back in easily.

Long story short: a couple of weeks after fixing the heating element, the electronic panel died. Some of the functions stopped working, and then they all stopped. Now this thing is sitting dead on my counter, ready for the landfill. Extremely disappointing performance from an appliance I paid extra for, hoping it would last many years.

Not buying another Krups anything anytime soon. ”

  • My baby carrier:

    Moby Wrap Baby Carrier

“ The Moby Wrap took some getting used to but now I love it.

It's just a long strip of fabric which you tie around the baby. It secures the baby snugly on your chest where she can rest her head against you or look up into your face. Very reassuring for the baby (my girl seems to love it).

The Moby Wrap has no frame or backpack skeleton at all. It's just soft fabric. This makes it comfortable enough to wear around the house in your pajamas. It will also pack up nice and small - to the size of a folded T shirt. Great for travel.

The best thing about it is the adjustability. It wraps 3 times around your body and you situate the baby between those intersecting folds. If you want to shift the baby to one side, you can adjust the straps, introducing slack where you want it and tightening where you need it. If one of the folds of fabric gets in the baby's face, you can peel it back and tuck it out of the way. If the baby's head needs supporting, you can bring one of the folds up and over it. It adjusts as you wear it, and it will give you options as the baby grows too.

It is a lot of fabric. By the time you have it on, it's as if you've put on a sweatshirt. So plan your layers accordingly. And it can take some learning to tie correctly. The first time I attempted to put it on I practically dislocated one shoulder reaching around behind myself to grab one of the straps. With a little bit of practice, it gets much easier. ”

  • My ebook reader:

    Amazon Kindle 3

“ Possibly one of my favorite products of all time. Imagine how ergonomic reading would be if every book was as light as a notepad and had adjustable size print. That's reading on a Kindle. No web, no Netflix, no games, no BS - just the joy of reading, and the best selection of ebooks online. Very hard to beat the $150 price tag, too. Don't get the 3g version - you don't need that unless you plan to purchase books on the go. Wifi is just fine. ”

  • My car seat:

    Boulevard Barrington Convertible Car Seat

“ my review body goes here (this is a test) ”

  • My mp3 player:

Apple iPod Classic 4th Generation 60GB

“ Great iPod that's lasted for years. Its cavernous capacity makes it the "deep freezer" of my mobile music collection. ”

  • My bike:

    Electra Townie Original 8i

“ This bike is fantastic. I never realized how uncomfortable my mountain bike was before I got on this thing. A real pleasure to ride. ”

  • My automobile:

    2005 Scion xB

“ Such a fantastic car! Very roomy inside, good mileage (33ish MPG), small and easy to park, low maintenance, has a bit of style. It's not superfast but it's not sluggish either. Legroom in the back seat is surprisingly huge. Only complaint is large turn radius. For some reason it doesn't turn as tight a U-turn as a Honda Civic. My wife and I both adore this car and we hope it lasts a long long time! ”

  • My PC laptop:

Lenovo Thinkpad T400 (2764CTO) Notebook Computer

“ This is all around a pretty good PC laptop. It's solidly built but not too large or heavy. The 14.1" screen is a nice size without making the laptop too huge. The keyboard is pretty good quality. The touchpad also works pretty well and has a nice scrolling feature built in.

I use this laptop for business and it runs all the Windows business apps like Excel and Powerpoint extremely well. I also use it for graphic design in Adobe apps and it performs well for those too. It even plays games decently well (it won't play shooter games at top graphics settings but it plays Civ 5, Starcraft 2 just fine). It does have dedicated graphics hardware.

It has lots of ports. 3 USB (split on both sides, which is convenient). Card slot. RJ45 for network and RJ11 for dialup. It even has one mini 1394 port. The headphone jack is located in the front, which is handy. Other small conveniences include physical volume up/down/mute buttons (so great) and a small led lamp built into the screen casing that can shine down over the keyboard if you are stuck working in the dark.

There is a handy wireless on/off switch for saving your battery when needed. I haven't optimized the battery settings which is perhaps why I only get an hour or 2 max out of the battery. One complaint is that it only has VGA video out (no DVI). I run a 24-inch monitor on the side just fine but I had a chance to upgrade to a 30" and this laptop couldn't drive it.

There is no camera built in to the laptop, which is actually fine by me! It seems that Lenovo has kept the Thinkpad line in good stead after acquiring it from IBM. The iconic "look" of the Thinkpad is still there.

There is a small amount of bloatware on this computer, but mostly the well-intentioned kind. For example, there is a Lenovo-created utility for turning power to the wireless on and off. I don't know why they bothered adding that instead of just relying on Windows 7's control panel - or the physical switch on the case. But anyway nothing horrible bundled like Norton or any of that garbage. Mostly it stays out of my way.

An SSD would be a nice improvement to this laptop. Boot times are several minutes long and app launching could be a lot faster. The HD seems to be a bottleneck. ”

  • My microwave:

Panasonic NN-SD697S Stainless Steel 1300 Watts Microwave Oven

“ Yeah I like my microwave pretty good. It's excellent at low-to-mid power gentle cooking. ”

  • My graphics card:

eVGA GeForce GTX 460 OC, (768 MB) PCI Express Video Card

“ This is a great chipset at a reasonable price. EVGA is probably the #1 favorite packager of nVidia hardware right now. With less than 1 GB of memory, this card won't win any prizes among the overclockers of the world, but it will still play most modern games well without breaking your budget. ”

  • My refrigerator:

    Maytag refrigerator

“ No complaints about this Maytag. It has a light in the freezer - ooooh! ”

  • My Juicer:

    Waring Juice Extractor PJC 44

“ This was a great juicer but I decided that juicing was not for me. It seems at first like an easy way to consume lots of fruit and vegetables but it's dangerous. You take all the protein out of fruit and you're left with nothing but huge amounts of sugar. I would get hot flashes after drinking the juice I made - no joke. ”

  • My dishwasher:

    Bosch SHE6AP0 Built-in Dishwasher

“ Extremely good cleaning performance and so quiet I can hardly believe it. Really, it makes almost no sound at all. We use environmentally friendly detergent and it works great with no rinse agent or anything. No spots, no mess. The only weird thing is an odd plastic smell that comes out of the dishwasher. It's fading over time - not sure what it was. I guess just the plastic parts inside. ”

  • My camcorder:

    Canon Elura Camcorder

“ Have had this thing for probably ten years and it's still going. Pretty impressive little piece of hardware. I've shot some great movies on it, traveled the world with it, even ventured into the desert with it. It's solidly made and works great with iMovie. ”

  • My headphones:

    Klipsch headphones

“ Great little set of noise-isolating IEMs keep me sane on the loud train trip to work each morning. Good sound quality and good iPhone compatibility. Worth the $120. ”

  • My grill:

Weber-Stephen Products One Touch Gold 22.5 Charcoal Grill

“ THE American classic barbecue. Still works. Wish the legs were a little better attached. ”

  • My mouse:

    Logitech M510 Wireless Mouse

“ The mouse is great. The software is a little buggy (loses custom settings from time to time). ”

  • My smartphone:

Apple iPhone 4 Black (32 GB) Smartphone

“ Another amazing piece of hardware from Apple. Upgrade experience was totally smooth. Very powerful and easy to use. I stuck with AT&T even though I hate them and their voice quality sucks. I'd heard that Verizon's data network is slower and you can't do voice + data at the same time with Verizon. Those are kind of big deals to me. ”

  • My space heater:

Honeywell HZ-709C Oil Filled Electric Radiator Heater

“ These things are a powerhouse for electric heating. Pretty easy to move around. They suck 500-800 watts, though, so don't leave it on all the time! ”

  • My scanner:

    Epson Perfection 2480

“ I bought this for one purpose: scanning lots of old photo prints. The feeder accepts up to 30 prints at once and it really speeds up the digitization process. My photos were old and some had bits of tape and junk on them, so the process required some attendance. But I got hundreds of them done. Recommended! ”

  • My blender:

    Krups blender

“ Glass pitcher is still in great shape but the plastic base it screws into is all cracked and leaky and grease-stained. Someone make a decent blender with sealed bearings, please. ”

  • My Smoke Detector:

    First Alert Smoke Detector

“ These things are nothing but trouble. Always chirping in the middle of the night. Never giving any conclusive alarms though. Just eating through the batteries and occasionally making noises for no reason I can figure out. And yes, I've read the instructions :) ”

  • My vacuum cleaner:

Dyson DC31 Animal Bagless Handheld Cyclonic Vacuum

“ This thing looks really fancy but it's not that great and hardly worth the high price. One thing to remember about the cyclone system that Dysons use is that it partly depends on gravity. Dust swirls into the multistage cyclone chamber and centrifugal force + gravity makes the dirt fall to the bottom where it's caught in the storage container. But guess what? With a handheld vac, you're going to want to turn it in all kinds of different directions, not just always keep it upright. This unit is very short. The nose telescopes out a few inches, but you pretty much have to squat down on the ground to use it. A longer snout or hose would have helped a lot. The dirt catcher is small and must be emptied frequently. Basically this thing is a design piece IMHO. It looks like a gun and is bagless and has a lithium ion battery, which is all cool. But in real world practice it is just okay, and I would hate to see anyone I know blow $300 on it. ”

  • My digital camera:

    Canon PowerShot S90 Digital Camera

“ The Canon Powershot S90 is small but powerful. Easy to use, but offers advanced features. In particular, it takes amazing photos in low-light situations like indoors at night. It isn't a "night vision" infrared camera that can take photos in pitch black, it just takes way better pictures in dark situations than any other camera I've seen. This makes it great for people shots in social situations. ”

  • My printer:

    HL-5340D Laser Mono 30ppm 1200x1200dpi 16mb With Duplex - BROTHER - HL53 Photo Printer

“ This thing is reliable, fast, not too bulky, and it was pretty cheap to pick up. Works easily with Mac and PC. My only complaint is that it arrived with a couple of specks on the drum which cause small black dots to be printed on every sheet - about 3 per page. I should return it for a drum replacement but it's a pretty minor defect. Still... Cautious recommendation. ”

  • My keyboard:

    Apple (MC184LL/A) Wireless Keyboard

“ Elegant, functional, and compact. We use this as the keyboard for our home theater Mac Mini. It's easy to keep near the couch and has always worked well. I do recommend some rechargeable batteries though. This thing will eat through the AAs. ”
