Should I wait for the Iphone 5? I heard it might come out in August. I've never had an Iphone, but I'm ready to make the switch from droid soon. Thoughts?

  • Andy Hilal: It has been a little over a year since the iPhone 4 came out. I think if you have the luxury of waiting a few months you should. It's not totally clear what features the iPhone 5 will offer but I'm hoping for a larger screen area and an FM radio. Can you believe the damn iPhone has the necessary hardware to receive FM radio but they just haven't given us the software yet?

Speaking of software, iOS version 5 is going to work on the 3GS, iPhone 4, plus whatever the iPhone 5 is. So if you have a pressing need for a new iPhone, don't wait. The OS upgrades will bring you most of the new goodies.

It's always the same with Apple products. You can wait for the next thing. But if you need it now, just get it now. The new new thing never stays new for long :)

    • Annette Musick Pace: thanks Andy, as.you.might.know.I.need.a.new.phone.now.....I didn't realize the hardware was all basically the same as the four. Does anyone have opinions about refurbished phones?

    • Andy Hilal: I am on my 3rd iPhone now. Both of the other 2 are still working and going strong, although they're not on any phone contract anymore. We just use them like iPod touchs. I don't know much about refurbs but in my experience iPhones are pretty durable over time and hold their value well. The 3GS is still a very good model.

  • Dan Gardener: CNET has an excellent piece rouding up all the iPhone 5 rumors. More info than you probably want to know, in fact :)

  • Annette Musick Pace: I probably do need the 32 GB. And I think I'll choose Verizon over AT&T. "more bars in more places"

    • Andy Hilal: Verizon will give you better call reception in San Francisco, without a doubt. And AT&T is not a company that deserves your business. The only thing to be aware of is that Verizon does not allow you to use voice + data at the same time. This means that if you're on a call with someone and want to look up something on the internet at the same time, you need to hang up first. On AT&T you can do both. It doesn't come up that frequently but sometimes it's a nice thing to have.

  • Annette Musick Pace: Oh wow, I do that ALL the time. What about GPS?

    • Andy Hilal: You won't be able to use Maps while on a call. The Maps app uses GPS satellites for your coordinates, but the graphical maps it displays come from the internet. So you need data access in order to really use maps. Won't work on Verizon while you're on a call.

    • Andy Hilal: Here's an app that lets you store the map on your device. This removes the need for data access to look at a map. http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/29/a-cheaper-way-to-navigate-abroad-no-costly-data-roaming-required/

  • Annette Musick Pace: oh cool. That's pretty lame that you can't do both. How come they can't support that capability I wonder......anyway, Yes, I'm going to purchase a new iphone within the next month. Especially after having read all this information. I hope the one I have holds out that long! :)

  • Larry Madsen: If you ask me, as a dad, it could go either way. My kids always want the next big thing, but at the same time, they're too stubborn to wait for new iPhone models. I think you should consider what you're looking for in each new version of the iPhone, because the differences aren't that much for the monthly waits in between new models.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new iPhone 4 though!
