For a device with a large high res screen, you would hope for the ability to take excellent photos that will look good even when you zoom in. I think everyone's scratching their head over Apple's decision.

But to answer your question, The Samsung Galaxy Tab has a 3 megapixel back-facing camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. Definitely in the right direction, though still not super impressive.

The Blackberry Playbook has a 5 MP back-facing camera and a 3MP front-facing camera, which is in the right ballpark of what I'd expect. The Motorola Xoom is 5 and 2.

Resolution isn't everything, but near the low end like this it does actually matter. The difference between 1 megapixel and 5 is real. Apple's resolution is so bad they don't even state it on their product page for the iPad2. It just says "still camera with 5x digital zoom." Ha!

So that's the resolution story. Unfortunately, while all the other manufacturers have beaten Apple on the megapixel count, none of these Android tablets has met with as good a reception as the iPad overall. Of the bunch, the Samsung Galaxy Tab has been the leader recently, though it has the lowest res camera of the Android tablets listed here

So it would seem, in a nutshell, that the good tablets have bad cameras. And there are better cameras in the bad tablets. :P Sorry, wish the news was better!

  • Andy Hilal: I agree with Dan it's kind of a bind. The iPad is definitely the best tablet out there but Apple really skimped on the camera inside.

Here's a device that might be of interest to you though. When I got my parents the first generation iPad (which has no camera) I also got them one of these. It's a small adapter that allows you to take the memory card out of your digital camera and plug it into your iPad. Photos import to the iPad quickly and easily. My parents use a point-and-shoot digicam quite a bit and this allows them to easily sync all the photos onto the iPad.

It might be something for you to consider if you already have a digital camera. The camera hardware in the iPad may be ok for "Facetime" conferencing but you won't be taking any high-quality photos with it. That might not matter much if you already have a digital camera though. A tablet is somewhat large and awkward for photography in some ways anyhow.
