• Artur Rivilis is in the market for a keyboard

What's a good ergonomic keyboard for my Dell Laptop? I've used the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic, but was wondering if there is something better.

You can slide these 3 pieces left and right inside a long metal track to position them where you want them (you can even place the keypad in the center, like I did). And each piece is completely adjustable in terms of pitch and angle. They spin and tilt freely in a universal joint. Place them in the position you want and then lock them down. They allow true freedom in terms of adjustment.

This not only allows you to get the position you need, it allows you to change positions periodically. The most important thing I've ever learned about ergonomics is to switch things up and not exert stress in the same exact position, hour after hour, day after day, week after week.

No other keyboard I know of gives you so much adjustability as these. However, you mentioned it was for a laptop. Comfort Keyboards are bulky and not very portable. So it depends what you need.

  • Dan Gardener: I agree with Andy that switching things up helps, so adjustability is a good thing. There is a smaller keyboard company called Smartfish that even makes a keyboard called the Engage that automatically moves around and changes shape and position slightly as you work. It senses how much repetitive work you're doing at one time, and shifts its tilt around slightly in response, also moving the two halves of the keyboard a little further apart or closer together. The idea is to create subtle differences in the angles your hands and arms take as you work, so that you don't repetitively wear down in any one position over the course of the day. It's pretty fascinating stuff. However, Smartfish appears to be a small startup and their product has been outrageously expensive and mostly unavailable since their announcement.

  • Diana Gainsworthy: I need my desk and keyboard to be nice and low. One of the things I like about my Apple keyboard is that it is very thin. It's not a huge difference, but the keys are a little lower than some other keyboards. It's also small and wireless so it's easy to move around or even place in your lap for a while if you want to change your position around.
