• Ralph Ainsley is in the market for a PC laptop

I've had a Dell laptop for a few years but it has started to crash more frequently due to age and poor customer service, so I'm probably going to upgrade soon. Asus seems to be a pretty stable brand; which of their models is best for practical use?

  • Andy Hilal: I like the look of the K43E for general use (meaning: not gaming, not ultralight). Opt for the Core i5 if you are looking for high performance. It also has the correct keyboard mapping (ie: arrow-T is to the right, not immediately under the Enter key - that drives me crazy). 14" screen is big enough for general use but keeps the laptop to a portable size.

I don't blame you for asking this, though. The Asus product lines are really hard to figure out. They make a ton of models but they don't lay them out very well on their site so you can tell the difference.

  • Geoffrey Chong: The latest Dell line is pretty good, everything breaks down with age so judging a brands' quality on that seems a bit harsh. Dell's customer service has always been good for me, but maybe that's just Australia.

End point, upgrading to a new Dell should still be an option

    • Ralph Ainsley: Thanks Geoffrey! After getting lost on the Asus website a few times I wonder if maybe I should stick with "the devil I know." Is an i3 a good investment for the long haul or should I shell out more now?

  • Andy Hilal: Also had to drop in and recommend Thinkpads, while we're at it. Here's the one I own.
