• Sandra Hilal is in the market for a printer

I am in the market for a printer and was not happy with my Canon i850. My Brother fax machine worked fine but it asked for toner replacements frequently and they are not cheap. Is the the Brother HL 53 laser printer more economical?

  • Dan Gardener: Hi Sandra,

I completely understand your frustration with your Canon i850. It costs $40 or $50 to refill all those ink cartridges. Inkjet printers really are a ripoff. The printer itself is cheap, but they kill you on the ink refills - which never last very long. In fact, there's so little ink inside those cartridges that printer ink is actually more costly per ml than human blood!

A laser printer like those made by Brother is going to be MUCH more economical for you than your Canon inkjet, or any other inkjet. Of course, the Brother HL-53 series are all black and white printers - so I assume you don't care about printing photos?

The HL-5340D is the most economical printer in that line. You can find single toner refills online for $60 or less. But that toner refill is going to last you thousands of pages. It's advertised to last 8,000 pages (assuming normal text pages with 5% coverage, not graphical stuff that covers the page in ink). You would be very lucky to get 3 *hundred* pages from an inkjet refill.

The Brother HL-5340D gets 4 out of 5 stars from both Amazon and NewEgg reviewers. It's available for under $200. Brother's home laser printers have gotten good reliability ratings for years.

I'm not sure why your fax machine gave you problems but I'd recommend a Brother laser any day of the week if you want an economical home printer for document purposes.
